The Home Building Skills Partnership (HBSP) has been awarded £1.9m by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to improve the recruitment, training and development of people from four under-represented but key groups - women, ex-military (12 months+), further education learners and young people not in education, employment or training.

Under its Pathways into Home Building Careers programme, the Skills Partnership will be working with employers, training partners, key stakeholders in home building, and existing support networks, over three years (2019-2022) to deliver this commitment.

Growing the sector’s workforce has never been more important. Industry figures show that we will need over 49,000 new recruits to increase house building output in line with the Government’s 300,000 target.

The scale of the challenge is laid bare when it is considered that an estimated 145,000 (31% of the total workforce) will retire over the coming years. Adding to the shortage will be a likely reduction in European workers' post-Brexit. Championing a diverse workforce will be key to solving the growing shortage of skills.

This project aims to promote home building as a career choice and recruit a more diverse and inclusive workforce, it is developing in collaboration with Home Builders pathways to help recruit and train people from under-represented groups of women, 12 months+ ex-military, further education learners and young people not in education, employment or training.

Women into Home Building Careers

HBF Skills Partnership has partnered with Women into Construction to design and develop specific routes for women to progress into technical skill-shortage roles such as site/assistant site managers, quantity surveyors, and technical coordinators and managers.

FE Learners into Home Building Careers

Pathway CTM has joined forces with HBF Skills Partnership to design and deliver a pathway into home building Trades for FE leavers on Construction courses.  The programme has already begun in the South East with over 14 colleges across London, Kent, Suffolk and Surrey.

Ex-Military (12 months+) into Home Building Careers

Ex-military personnel have the skills that home builders require, including discipline and teamwork. The HBF Skills Partnership will build on existing recruitment programmes being run by home builders to develop a pathway that will help more former servicemen and women who left the service more than 12 months ago into roles in the home building industry.

Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) into Home Building Careers

With only one in ten young people with low level skills progressing into employment, HBF Skills Partnership is partnering with regional delivery partners and employers to deliver a pathway into home building careers for this target group.  It will focus on developing soft skills and providing practical and pastoral support that will improve confidence and employment skills leading to more job opportunities
