Consumer Code for Home Builders

A revised version of the Consumer Code came into effect for all new reservations taken from 1st April 2013.

Copies of the Code are downloadable from the Code website: www.consumercodeforhomebuilders.com, as are Guidance on applying the Code. You may download and print copies of the Code from the website to give to your customers to comply with one of the Code Requirements.

The website also offers additional help and guidance in the ‘Frequently asked Questions’ section, which you are advised to check regularly as further questions and advice are added.

The website also gives access to Code logos, which you are free and encouraged to use on your stationery and publications.

The website will shortly carry a link to an e-training package which you can use for your own company training.

HBF members are encouraged to seek further help and advice available through the contacts given on the website.

Finally it is also worth remembering that the OFT recommended to government that they should consider regulation in this matter. Subsequently we persuaded Government that we were able to effectively self regulate through our own Code – a position that has been accepted subject to the Code being successful in achieving its objectives.

It is very important that the Industry achieves a high level of compliance with the Code. If this cannot be demonstrated, then Government may decide to accept the OFT recommendation which could take control out of the hands of the Industry and may  lead to  legislation, third party Ombudsman, and a levy on the industry.

HBF would therefore urge you to do your utmost to ensure you are complying with the Code
