HBF Member Briefing - Ministerial reshuffle update

Following our ‘on the day’ briefing on Tuesday, the Prime Minister’s ministerial reshuffle has now been completed and clarification on individual minister’s responsibilities has been published.

Headlines 

Brandon Lewis MP, previously the local government minister, is the new Housing and Planning Minister combining the two for the first time since 2009. As well as the wider housing and planning responsibilities, he will have overarching ministerial responsibility for the Ebbsfleet development. He takes over the housing portfolio from Kris Hopkins MP who stays in the DCLG team with a brief which includes local government, pubs.

Mr Lewis will be supported on planning casework by a new addition to the ministerial ranks, Penny Mordaunt MP whose primary responsibilities will lie with the fire service, coastal communities, local growth and high streets.

Baroness Stowell, who had been responsible for taking the Infrastructure Bill provisions relating to planning and zero carbon homes through the House of Lords leaves DCLG having been promoted to Leader of the House of Lords. Her replacement in the DCLG ministerial team, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon will be responsible for all relevant business in the House of Lords. Another former councillor, Lord Ahmad served for more than 10 years on Merton Council.

Eric Pickles, Stephen Williams and Baroness Warsi retain their current roles and responsibilities at DCLG.

Former Planning Minister, Nick Boles MP has been promoted to be Minister of State for Skills, Enterprise and Equalities working across both the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department for Education. His new responsibilities include training, skills and apprenticeships.

Elizabeth Truss is the new Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. She has moved across from the Department for Education.
