HBF membership FAQ

Membership of the Home Builders Federation is available to home builders, land developers, the wider housing industry and connected professions.

HBF offers Full membership for house builders of all sizes as well as housing associations and land companies.

Associate membership is available to connected professionals and organisations, including planning consultants, conveyancers, lenders, estate agents and more.

Free student membership is also for those studying a training course in construction or related subjects.

Full members

Your annual subscription for Full membership will be based on your turnover, as declared in your statutory accounts for the year ended in the preceding 12 months to 30 September. For example, your 2024 subscription would be based on your turnover for the year ending 30 September 2023.

HBF membership operates on a calendar year, pro-rata basis. So the initial membership fee will be determined by your sign-up date. For instance, if you enrol in September, your initial fee will cover the last four months of the year.

Each autumn we request ‘Turnover Declarations’ from all our members which provide the necessary information to calculate the subsequent year’s subscription, based on banded fees.

Associate members

Associate membership is £3,000 per calendar year, which would be charged pro rata depending upon which month you joined.

Once you’ve filled out the form, we will review the application and be in touch within five working days to discuss next steps and payment terms.

When applying for Full or Associate membership, you will need to provide:

  • Individual contact details for finance and membership matters (this can be the same person and is usually the most senior person(s) within your organisation).
  • Company head office address.
  • Invoice address (if different).
  • Company registration number if applicable.

When applying for Full membership, you will also need to provide:

  • The business's total number of completions over the last 2 years, as declared in your statutory accounts.
  • The combined turnover for these completions, as declared in your statutory accounts.
  • The date of your financial year-end.
  • Number of employees.
  • Warranty body name and warranty registration number (if applicable).

Students can also apply for student membership by filling out a separate form.

Full and associate membership application steps are as follows:

  • Step 1: Register for an online account, and verify your email address.
  • Step 2: Fill out and complete the online membership form.
  • Step 3: Check the details on the application and submit your completed form.
  • Step 4: HBF reviews the membership application within 5 working days and will get in touch if any further information is needed.
  • Step 5: Full and associate members will be sent an invitation to pay and given 30 days to complete payment.
  • Step 6: HBF membership will be activated as soon as your payment has been processed, at which point you and your teams will have access HBF benefits and be able to create online accounts.

When applying for Full membership, you will need to provide company information as explained in 'What information do I need to apply?' section.

Full and Associate members will be sent an invitation to pay and given 30 days to complete payment.

Free student membership will be activated once our team has checked your eligibility, within five working days of receiving your application.

Once our membership team has received your application, we will review your details and eligibility within five working days.

Full and Associate members will at that time be sent an invitation to pay and given 30 days to make payment.

Your HBF membership will be activated as soon as we have processed your payment.

HBF membership operates on a calendar year, pro-rata basis. The duration of your contract is determined by your sign-up date. For instance, if you join in January, your contract will last for 12 months, while those who enrol in September will have a four month contract.

Our membership is structured as a rolling contract. In December, we will send you an invitation to renew your membership for the upcoming year by paying the fee. This payment effectively extends your contract for another 12 months. If you decide not to continue, you can inform our membership team at that time.

Yes. If the company applying is part of a group (or has associated Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) or Special Purpose Entity (EPE) ) then all parts of the group will be included in the membership and you will need to provide the combined turnover relating to new build completions and the number of completions as declared in your statutory accounts for the last two years.

HBF membership is a business cost so it is tax deductible.
