London Planning

Overview

Planning in London operates on 2 tiers:

The Mayor / Greater London Authority produces the London Plan which was produced in February 2004 and has recently been partially altered in respect of housing and waste policies. The housing alterations increase the annual rate of new housing in London to a minimum of 30,650 per year. The London Plan is the Spatial Development Strategy for London. The London Plan is supported by a variety of Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) and Best Practice Guidance to be issued by the Mayor.

A formal review of parts of the London Plan was undertaken in the summer, and the Panel's Report on this "the Examination in Public of the Further Alterations to the London Plan" was published on the 8th October.  A summary of the key issues for Members was produced on 15th October please click here to view.

Following submission to the Secretary of State in the late Autumn, we are expecting the Mayor to publish the Further Alterations before the London Assembly Elections in May 2008.

Each London borough is also required to prepare a Local Development Framework to replace their current individual Unitary Development Plan (UDP) and associate SPG.

The HBF are represented on a number of strategic forums that bring together various organisations to discuss progress on relevant housing matters in London. These are the Housing Forum for London and the Housing Forum for London - Supply Sub-group. We also liaise with the Government Office for London through the HBF housing practitioners forum.
